PROGRAM NAME: Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education

PROGRAM DISCRIPTION:

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) is designed to provide the student teacher with a variety of pedagogical knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will enable them implement the school curriculum effectively. Students will be able to acquire the following competences:

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:

In this program you will be able to:

  • show broad and coherent knowledge of children aged 0-8 years, and how they learn with capacity to show initiative and judgement when making decisions or solving problems
  • show broad and coherent knowledge of early childhood curriculum and quality frameworks within the Zambian context, and capacity to critically review theory and practice
  • show initiative and judgement to plan for, and implement, effective teaching and learning in diverse contexts with the capacity to solve problems with intellectual independence
  • apply knowledge and skills to create and maintain supportive, safe and engaging learning environments, and the ability to critically analyse information in diverse contexts
  • demonstrate the capacity to assess children’s learning and use clear communication to report the outcomes to parents and communities with the ability to critically analyse, consolidate and synthesise assessment information

This programme aims to develop an understanding and critical appreciation of the theories, tools and techniques of primary teaching that will enable graduates to more effectively participate in teaching at primary school level. In doing so, the programme seeks to improve the quality of Primary school teaching.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:

In this program, you will:

  • Be equipped with abilities, knowledge, skills, attitudes and values responsive to the needs of society.

PROGRAM NAME: Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education

PROGRAM DISCRIPTION:

This program is designed to produce professionally qualified teachers who are able to apply a combination of subject matter knowledge with the relevant pedagogical approaches to ensure improved learning outcomes under various contexts. The qualification will contribute to the national efforts for the production of innovative and competent Secondary school teachers who would make lasting impressions in the lives of learners.

The qualification will also equip teachers with the necessary teaching skills, competencies, and strategies to be effective secondary school teachers, academic manager and administrators. The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) has been developed in response to the high demand for appropriately qualified teachers in Zambia. The rationale for the development of this qualification was motivated by the need to meet the need of producing well qualified teacher at secondary who will implement the Zambia curriculum Framework of 2013. The follwing are the teaching subjects in this program.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:

In this program, you will:

  • Teach secondary school subjects of their respective specialisation;
  • Utilise teaching methods that foster learners’ independent and dependent inquiry and in- depth understanding;
  • Develop authentic means for assessing learning and to inform their teaching and learners` learning;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working ethically and collectively with colleagues to achieve high quality, equitable outcomes for learners and the wider community;
  • Design curriculum that meets the changing secondary education needs of Zambia with special reference to outcomes-based education;
  • Promote, coordinate and conduct research into secondary school problems through the prescribed subjects offered at particular levels;
  • Interpret, systemise and utilise in practice existing knowledge in view of the education task;
  • Apply various techniques to carry out different roles of a secondary school educator, i.e. as a lifelong learner, facilitator, mediator of learning, curriculum designer, administrator, assessor, agent of change, specialist in the selected subject(s) and a responsible citizen.
